Teaching English in Latvia

Latvia Overview

The level of demand for native speakers in Latvia is reasonably high and growing all the time. Salaries are low but, as is the case in most countries, the more experience you have the better salary you will be able to negotiate. Riga itself is a fascinating city and is where the vast majority of the opportunities are. Despite the harsh winters, Lativa is a great place to live and looks set for further growth as a popular tourist destination over the coming years. Working conditions vary from one language centre to another so it is vital to do as much research as you can before signing a contract.

Type of Institution Typical salary (USD/month) Typical hours Typical annual leave
Language centres 700 – 1,000 (DOS) Various but sometimes 6 days a week 2 weeks plus national holidays
International schools and universities 2,500 upwards 9am – 4pm Monday to Friday plus some weekend work 10 weeks plus national holidays

Main places for jobs

Typical requirements

Degree, TEFL certificate, EU national.

The University of Toronto TEFL Online - Internationally Recognized

1. Non-EU nationals should try to arrange a job and a work permit several months before arriving.

2. Given the low salaries, you may need to supplement your income with extra, private one-to-one tuition.

3. You may wish to take a look at the Latvian Association of Teachers of English (LATE) website.

Red tape

As with most countries in Europe, it is a lot easier for EU nationals to find work as the paperwork required is significantly less than when applying to employ non-EU nationals. Employers usually take care of work permit arrangements.

Cost of living

Living costs are low, but accommodation costs are rising considerably in Riga.

Tax and salary information

Employers generally pay your income tax for you and as usual you should expect to be paid on a monthly basis.

Strong demand for English tuition Lots of red tape for non-EU nationals
Keen and pleasant students Job offers are not usually made prior to your arrival in Latvia
Reasonably low living costs Low salaries

    Dear Director,

“I’m ready to saddle my life experiences and go adventure new cultures and harness new customs.” Hi’ my name is Miguel Caamaño, I am a very adaptable, curious, open minded and trustworthy person who is ready to seek new adventure and new life experiences. Teaching ESL abroad is a long lasting dream of mine I’ve had for quite some time now. I also believe teaching ESL to children of all ages will give me a strong sense of accomplishment and give me life lasting impressions of my outlook on life. I’m looking forward to learning and developing my own skills and knowledge as a ESL teacher as well.

Have a genuine relationship with your students. I’ve found that caring genuinely about my students in the past has had a significant impact on their attitudes, motivation and behavior. These students I’ve learned over the years as a day care assistant will become more engaged, work harder and be more successful learners. A strategy that I’ve found very productive with learners especially with pre kinder and grade school students is that a variety of games and group activities as well as songs and melody rhymes are very effective and entertaining. Furthermore students at these age levels have a short attention span and can become bored easily so always have a back up lesson.

I’m so grateful that as a young adult I found that helping people learn is my passion, whether it was at the gym or in the classroom or even on the field playing ball, the feeling of helping someone achieve a goal or influence an accomplishment is foremost one of the best feelings in the world! In child care I’ve seen first hand how observant and fascinating a child can quickly learn and progress at what they find interesting and entertaining. I’ve been told numerous times that I’m a very interesting individual and have a gift of being well liked. My plan is to harness that gift in a way that helps learners engage themselves more frequently and productively.

Dear Hiring Manager(Committee): It is with great interest that I am applying for the position of an E.S.L. teacher at your school. After researching a variety of different opportunities, I’ve decided that teaching E.S.L. abroad is certainly the right choice for me. I feel sincere that teaching overseas will offer me a chance to learn a new culture as well as learn to be a better educator. Additionally, volunteering as a swimming instructor and working as a child care helper has allowed me to work with children on an ongoing basis… I thank you for taking the time on considering me for the available position. If you have any questions feel absolutely free to contact me at your convenience.

    Sincerely Miguel Caamaño,

    Miguel Caamano
