Bulgaria Overview

Located at the crossroads of various different cultures, Bulgaria is one of the most fascinating countries in Europe. It’s also one of the most beautiful – home to no less than nine UNESCO World Heritage Sites. TEFL salaries are not very high but living costs are lower than in Western Europe so a reasonable standard of living is possible for native English speakers. As per usual, it is difficult for non-EU nationals to find work here due to legal regulations (unless they happen to be married to an Bulgarian!) English is now the second language of Bulgaria so it is no surprise that there is growing demand for classes with native speakers.

Type of Institution Typical salary (USD/month) Typical hours Typical annual leave
Language centres 800 – 1,200 (DOS) Various but sometimes 6 days a week 2 weeks plus national holidays
International schools and universities 2,500 upwards 9am – 4pm Monday to Friday plus some weekend work 10 weeks plus national holidays

Main places for jobs

Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas.

Typical requirements

Degree, TEFL certificate, EU national.

The University of Toronto TEFL Online - Internationally Recognized

Tips

1. To really impress the locals, learn some Bulgarian before you arrive.

2. Contracts often include free furnished accommodation so this make sure you ask about this during your interview.

3. Interestingly, Bulgarian shake their head to mean ‘no’ and nod to mean ‘yes’!

Red tape

As with most countries in Europe, it is a lot easier for EU nationals to find work as the paperwork required is significantly less than when applying to employ non-EU nationals.

Cost of living

Low – accommodation, food and transport (buses).

Tax and salary information

Employers generally pay your income tax for you and as usual you should expect to be paid on a monthly basis.

Summary

Growing demand for English tuition Lots of red tape for non-EU nationals
One of the most beautiful and fascinating countries in Europe Rather low salaries
Friendly local people and hard-working students Stray dogs can be quite a nuisance
