Teaching English in Belize

Belize Overview

The official language of Belize is English so there is not much demand for English tuition. You may be able to find volunteering opportunities but any paid positions will be very poorly-paid. As in most Latin American countries the people are lively and sociable and therefore a pleasure to teach. The country offers excellent opportunities to those interested in outdoor pursuits such as scuba diving and jungle trekking. However, the crime rate is very, very high so it is crucial to get as much advice about where and where not to go.

Type of Institution Typical salary (USD/month) Typical hours Typical annual leave
Language centres 500 – 800 Various split shifts and evenings and weekends 2 weeks plus national holidays
International schools and universities 2,500 upwards 9am – 4pm Monday to Friday plus some weekend work 10 weeks plus national holidays

Main places for jobs

Typical requirements

1. A CELTA or TEFL certificate is not strictly necessary, but you will find that if you have one you are eligible for better jobs and better pay. You’ll also be a more confident teacher.

2. Consider volunteering at first as a way of learning about the country in more details and making contacts.

3. American and Canadian teachers may be at a slight advantage.

Red tape

Your employer is responsible for obtaining your work permit. However, in reality, many work illegally. Despite the flexibility this allows, this is not recommended for obvious reasons.

Cost of living

Public transport and local food is cheap. Secure accommodation can be a little more expensive so you will probably have to share with another teacher.

Tax and salary information

You should expect to be paid on a monthly basis. Make sure you actually have a contract or else you may have problems when it comes to payday.

Fantastic, sociable students Low demand for English tuition
Experience and certification not required for basic teaching positions High crime rate
A great place for those who like to explore the great outdoors It is very difficult to find work unless you are already in the country

  1. Kimberley Harris says:

I have a an ESL Certificate and I would love to teach English in the Corozal District of Belize. I have been teaching in the United States for 3 years. Currently I have a home in the Corozal District so staying there in Belize would not be a challenge for me.

Please let me know if there are any available positions open in any part of Belize but specifically in the Corozal area since that is where I have a home.

Thank you so much for this service and have a wonderful day!
